1895: Cecily longs to learn the new art of photography and is determined that her widowed father will come to love it too, especially when she realises that her new friend and photographer, Rosalind, would be a perfect match for him. Will her dreams of uniting them ever come true?

A touching and beautiful tale set at No.6 Chelsea Walk. Adele Geras has previously been shortlisted for the Whitbread Children’s Book Award and Highly Commended for the Carnegie Medal.

At No.6 Chelsea Walk, different generations of girls grow up, each with facing the challenges of thier era. In this story, Cecily is restricted by the strict Victorian values and perception of women of the times. She is intrigued by the new 'technology' that is the camera vs the traditional painting, but her father treats it as nonsense and reacts by restricting her movements. It is through books like this, that one can appreciate the long and difficult journey that is social reform and that although at the time it seems like no progress is made, when looking back a century, it is possible to see that change does happen, we just need to keep at it (and try to learn from te past to speed up current changes needed).

NOTE: This is also published as 'Girls behind the Camera'.

Why we recommend this book:

It provides an excellent glimpse into the past and the limitations on women and how they were expected to behave. Part of the ‘Girl’s With A Voice series’, this title looks at the exciting introduction of photography and the resistance faced by the artists of the time.
